The iPad is known for it’s simplicity, in fact that’s really how it single handedly created the tablet pc industry and then continues to dominate it today.

But lately Apple has thrown a curveball towards it’s users when it decided to name the latest version of the iPad as the “new” iPad instead of iPad 3. Although for purists like myself who like to keep things organised and number devices and software releases accordingly so it’s easier to keep track of versions. This keeps you off track.

For one thing, I like how Windows has come back into the fold and users Windows 7, Windows 8 etc.. For a while they were naming them XP, Me (remember that one..), Vista etc. It was very confusing for people who are not familair with computers as to which one to go for. At least now with the upcoming Windows 8, any novice computer user given the choice of Windows 7 or Windows 8 can easily make a pretty good guess.

Anyway, I suspect Apple has decided to name the latest iPad as the “new iPad” because it makes it patently clear to consumers that the “new iPad” is the latest iPad therefore it prevents consumers from hesitating. They know from the onset that the “new iPad” is the latest and best version and facilitates the transaction.

I do suspect that later on they will change it’s name to just iPad 3. In time for the release of iPad 4. :)

There seems to be quite a lot of companies out there today who are hiring iPads, in fact a lot of traditional computer leasing companies have saw a massive gap in the market for iPad rentals and have decided to rush into the market.

Although most iPad rentals are meant to be for businesses only, a lot of individuals are hiring them for one off occasions. A lot of enterprising airlines are renting them out to passengers, there is also some one off use by individuals to use iPads in job interviews.

I was recently asked by a bunch of people as to whether it was worthwhile renting out iPads now in order to save money until the next iPad 3 comes out. This is generally a bad idea, if you look at the rental prices listed on this website. You’ll see the the costs can easily mount up. A single days rental is around £18, but it becomes £5 a day if you rent for long term. That is still very dear. You could be looking at £150 a month. I don’t think it’s worthwhile hiring purely for the sake of saving money to be honest. Because it is very expensive. You’re better off buying an iPad 2 now and when iPad 3 comes up sell your old one on ebay to get some of your money back. I’m pretty sure that any money that you “lose” will be less than the rental fees.
